How to Draw People to Your Website - Spreading the Word (cont.)

Now, this is a more effective link...
|
When the search engines find this link on your page, they'll know it's related to "dog treats", and if you have other site owners linking to your pages it's even more important that they use keywords for the links.

Common sense will tell you that if another site owner besides you thinks your site is an important place to go to find dog treats, the search engines will attach even more significance
to that link than if you simply said it about yourself. |

You can talk all you want on your own site about how great your dog treats are, but it means a lot more if someone else is raving about your treats on their site. Just like in real life, anybody can boast about their own talents, but isn't it a lot more meaningful to you when someone tells you about another person's talents other than their own?

The search engines are well aware of this. That's why they place more value on keywords that appear in links pointing to your site from other websites, and less when they are just in the body text of your own site. But remember, those linked words need to be related to your specific products & services.
