How to Draw People to Your Website - Spreading the Word (cont.)

Sadly, this link was wasted...
From the search engine's perspective at least. The words "click here" were used for the link. Unfortunately, no one searching for dog treats would do so by typing the words "click here" into Google.

Remember, your ultimate goal is to lead the "right" people to your website - the people who are interested in the specific products & services you provide. For example, if you're a brain surgeon, you'd want the link to say something like "brain surgery"; if you are a jazz musician, you might want it to say "jazz virtuoso".

When another site provides a link to your website, the search engines look at it like a referral. If 1,000 people put on their websites "Bill Smith is a great guy" with the link on the words "great guy" leading to Bill's real estate website, only people searching in Google for a great guy would be led to Bill's site. Bill's not going to sell any homes by just being known as a "great guy". But if Bill wants to build his credibility in the marketplace as a great "real estate agent", that link better include the words "real estate agent".
