How to Draw People to Your Website - EffectivelyPlacing Keywords into your Pages (cont.)

Games People Play
|
When you place keywords into your web pages, don’t try to be too “clever.” Although it's unusual, some web designers have had their sites banned because they played tricks on the search engines.

Even if your site doesn’t get banned, the keywords you “covertly” place on your pages may simply get ignored by the search bots. For example, one designer of a pharmaceutical company’s site knows the search engines look for keywords in html text. But visitors to the site might not appreciate looking at a page that lists the words “rheumatoid arthritis” 500 times on the page. So, the designer put those words in a white font on a white background and viola, the visitor only saw white space at the bottom of the page.

But the search engines know this, and their search bots have been programmed to disregard text in the same color as the page’s background. Some search bots can even tell if the font color is just slightly different from the background, and will disqualify any phrases that appear in that text. For a list of other things the search engines don’t like, check out Search Engine Optimization for Dummies by Peter Kent.

Use Links Effectively
Search engines place more importance on keywords that appear on links, so it’s important not to waste them. For example, the second link below makes proper use of valuable keywords, while the first wastes the link by using the generic phrase “click here.” Based on the first link alone, your puppy food website would rate better for the phrase “click here” than for “dog treats!”
