How to Draw People to Your Website - Using Meta-tags Effectively cont.

Many people have abused Meta-tags by putting in keywords that have nothing to do with the actual content on their pages. To prevent users from getting irrelevant results, the search engines also look at the content to see if it matches the Meta-tags. Be sure that your keywords, and slight variations on them, actually appear in the content of your pages.

We’ve talked about the theory behind Meta-tags, but maybe you’re not familiar enough with html to actually input the code. There are a number of Meta-tag generators that will do it for you. Simply type your keywords & other information into their pre-made fields & the generators do the rest. Then, you just have to copy & paste the result into your webpage. You should be aware that some of these create a bit of unnecessary code that could clutter up your html.

Now that you’ve strategically placed your keywords into your site’s html text & Meta-tags, it’s time to spread the word about your site. If you haven’t done so already, you will want to register your site with the search engines.

Should you pay for this service? Which search engines are the most important, and which ones can you ignore? What other ways can you get the word out to new customers about your site? I will answer these questions in the next article of this series, “Spreading the Word.”
