How to Draw People to Your Website - Closing the Deal (cont.)

Don't scare them away!
There are things you'll want to avoid because they'll draw people away from your website:
Test the key pages of your site to see how long they take to load on different browsers. Studies show people will only wait 8 to 10 seconds for a page to load. If the front page or landing page* of your site is full of memory-hogging graphics, most people will not wait for them to load.
It’s great when you can offer videos, sound, and other multimedia options to your visitors, but don’t make them run automatically. Instead, let users click to see the video or hear the song you hope to entertain them with. Make the page itself easy to load & simple to understand. Get them in the door first, and then let them decide which bells & whistles they’re interested in.
Eliminate or minimize the use of pop-ups on your site. Also avoid pop-ups that use pulsating, headache-inducing colors. If you sell your space to advertisers, be selective about the kinds of ads you accept. Contrary to what some advertisers think, it’s not a good marketing strategy to chase or scare away your visitors with an obnoxious graphic.
If you provide links to other websites, be sure to open those sites in a separate window (by setting the target to “blank"), so your visitors don't lose their place on your site.
Unless you’re running an online magazine where selling advertising space is a necessity, think about whether or not you want to give away prime real estate on your website. Do you really want to go through all the trouble of leading people to your site only to have them purchase from someone else?

*A landing page is any page on your site that people are led to from outside links or search engines.
