8 Steps to Successfully Managing your Documentation Projects
Step 4: Define Your Development Process & Stick To It (continued)

Track Everything You Do
Regardless of whether you're managing the project for an external or internal client, you need a good system for accurately tracking your development time & expenses.

While you may not be able to charge for every minute of work on every aspect of the project, you still want to be aware of exactly how much time you’re really spending on each task. This allows you to substantiate your work and to see opportunites for improvement going forward. If you find too many unbillable hours being spent on a task, you may need to allow for that in future estimates - or see if there’s a way to be more efficient next time.

You’ll also want to be diligent about recording all your expenses related to the project. Even the small stuff can add up quickly, so keep an eye on it!

Managing & tracking a documentation project can be an enormous & complex task, but if you use the principles we’ve discussed here, you’ll be well on your way to success!
