| 8 Steps to Successfully Managing your Documentation Projects |
| Step 3: Build Your Team |
| |
Your
company has assigned you the task of documenting
their procedures. You've identified your audience and
defined the documentation you plan to create - but you
can't do it all alone!
So how do you select the right people with the
appropriate skills to get the job done? Welcome
to Part Three of our ongoing series, 8 Steps to Successfully Managing Your Documentation Projects. |
|
| |
| Matching Skills with Needs |
|
| First,
determine what knowledge & skills are needed to
produce the documents & training materials for your
project. This will help you decide what pieces of the
project can be handled by company employees &
what will be outsourced. Don't assume that the
employee who knows your product or process inside
& out can also translate that knowledge into an
effective manual or training program! |
| |
| Just like engineers, programmers, & product
developers, good technical writers have special skills
& training. They should have a unique understanding
of the psychology of learning, and be proficient at
translating information into language that your
intended audience can readily grasp & understand. |
| |
| Team Spirit |
| Some companies have all the resources they need to
get a documentation or training development project
completed from start to finish - but most do not.
You may decide to outsource some or all of your
project to professional technical communicators. |
