I Spy (Continued)

A word of warning – some spyware programs masquerade as anti-spyware utilities. They offer up professional-looking websites and even collect your credit card info securely, but they are actually just more spyware – and you’re paying them for the privilege of installing it on your system!

So stick with the recommended programs from vendors you know you can trust. Two of the best and most widely used are AdAware and SpyBot Search & Destroy. (Watch out for other sites that use names that are VERY similar to these!)

Just like viruses, new spyware shows up every day, so you should be vigilant about scanning your system and updating your anti-spyware programs on a regular basis – at least weekly if you regularly connect to the Internet.

The thing is, each program uses different methods for scanning your system and scans for different types of spyware, so one may find things the other doesn’t. So I have Norton, SpyBot, AdAware, and Defender on my system, and run them all once a week.
