Now where did I put that file?
Part 1 - Location, location, location!
by Jan Johansen

You’re making a presentation in 20 minutes, and you need to print those handouts you’ve been working on all week. You know you saved that file last night, but you can’t find it anywhere on your PC!

It happens to all of us – even the most organized people. But by applying some common-sense file organizing & naming tips, you can avoid unnecessary anxiety and confusion. Just follow these simple rules to keep your files right at your fingertips. First, let’s take a look at your filing system.

An oldie, but…
The file cabinet analogy may an old one, but it’s still the best way to visualize your system:
Think of each of your hard drives as giant file cabinets, with the main folders in each
drive being the file cabinet drawers.
If you’re running Windows, you’re C: file cabinet will have a folder – or drawer – called
Windows, plus several others – like Documents and Settings and Program Files.
When you open the Windows drawer, you’ll see several sub-folders – like Fonts and
System. Think of these sub-folders as those green Pendaflex™ hanging files.
Then, each hanging file holds one or more manila folders. These are your sub-sub-
    folders.
Like real manila folders that store your paper files, electronic folders at any level can
store all types of electronic files – like programs, letters, reports, invoices, photographs,
    bank statements, etc.
