Anticipation - Is your system slowing you down? (Cont.)

|
Disk Defragmenter reorganizes your file storage to eliminate as many of these gaps as possible, thereby increasing your CPU’s efficiency. I’d suggest shutting down all your programs and running Disk Cleanup first, since you’ll get the most out of the “defrag” after you’ve already removed any unwanted files. Then select Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter from Start>All Programs.

Also, if you haven’t run the Disk Defragmenter for a while, make sure you won’t need to use your computer for a couple hours. You probably only need to do this every month or two – and be sure to back up your data first! Those of you who use graphic, video, or music editing programs should definitely defragment your hard drive to keep them running smoothly.

Recycle…
|
Microsoft created the Recycle Bin to protect you from accidentally deleting something you need – like those times you have to dig through your office wastebasket to retrieve something you accidentally threw out. When you delete files from your hard drive, they get stored in your Recycle Bin until you “empty the trash.” But your Recycle Bin can fill up fast and use valuable processing space on your hard drive, so I’d recommend you empty it at least every few days.

Just right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and select Empty Recycle Bin. Be sure you know what you’re tossing because once it’s gone, you may not be able to get it back!
