| Not all temp files are created equal… |
|
| Many software programs store information on your hard drive while they perform tasks – creating temporary files in the process. When a program is finished with a task, the files it creates should go away – but that doesn’t always happen. The temporary files left behind can accumulate over time – using valuable disk space and bogging down your system. |

| Disk Cleanup takes care of some temp files, but there are others lurking behind your system that you’ll want to delete manually. (This is the “secret” trick we told you about earlier.) You’ll be amazed at how many files have accumulated – causing some pretty wacky behavior from your Windows programs. A friend of mine, after using her new PC for less than a year, had over 7,000 files in this “hidden” folder and the improvement in her system performance after she cleaned them out was remarkable! |
| |
| We’ve written some instructions on how to delete temp files for you to download & keep as a handy reference. Most people don’t know about this valuable tip, so feel free to pass these instructions along to your friends, family, and coworkers. |

| Picking up the pieces… |
|
| On a brand new hard drive, files are stored in contiguous blocks. But as files are deleted, they leave gaps on your hard drive. When you save new files, your drive tries to utilize those gaps by breaking up the new file and storing it in fragments. This is entirely invisible to you, but it can slow you down as the drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file. |
