By allowing two possible answers for eight of the questions, 39 Across (clue = elected) could either read “Bob Dole” or “Clinton.”

Behind the Words
Many people don’t realize that each crossword puzzle comes with an underlying theme. Once understood, it helps the puzzler discover the answers to many of the clues. Just like a good tech writer, puzzlers must be able to identify the underlying concepts, take information from various sources, and put it all together into a completed whole.

And being a skillful crossword puzzler is not always about using what you already know. “Sometimes you have to do a little research,” said Jackie. “You have to be determined to find the right answers.”

Technical communicators take language that's unique to a specific field and translate it into words the intended audience can easily understand. That audience could be a company’s customers, managers, or newly-hired employees. Sometimes the writer must take very complex, technical content (from an engineer or software developer, for example), and translate it into a training program or user manual that speaks to a variety of audiences with a wide range of skills & experience.

Good technical writers and crossword puzzlers have a lot in common; they have a way with words.
