On a warm Saturday in April, dozens of Friends of the Rivers took to their canoes for the May River Clean-Up. Others, like myself, donned gloves, boots, and loads of insect repellant to pick up discarded trash along the river by hand.

The May River runs through my new hometown in Bluffton, SC. I recently moved here from the Chicago suburbs where I was often frustrated by the discarded wrappers, beer cans, and other debris that would float into our retention pond.

While visiting a local potter’s shop in Bluffton, Jacob Preston, the owner, told me about the Friends of the Rivers and the upcoming May River Clean-Up.

I felt that any small amount of help I could give would ultimately make a difference, and so did the other 200 or so people who showed up that Saturday. In fact, the event was such a success that some people even complained that there's no longer “enough” garbage left to pick up.

The cleanup started at the Bluffton Oyster Factory with a little prayer for safety (water moccasins are abundant in the SC wetlands). Participants were invited to return around noon for a little live music & local food.
